New Menu Items At The Thirsty Koala
If you have yet to hop over to Ditmars to try out The Thirsty Koala, the recent addition of kangaroo to the menu might put a little spring in your step. It may not be served as a ‘hot pocket’ or a ‘sloppy joey,’ but the hard-to-find marsupial meat is now available as a steak with pomegranate reduction over kumara mash, a plate of 3 sliders, or this 8 oz. Aussie burger with ‘the lot’–housemade goat cheese, pickled beets, grilled pineapple, bacon, and a sunny side up egg.
Free range and wild game, the meat is extremely lean, somewhat resembling a cross between bison and venison. The steak is best described as a sweeter filet mignon.
The menu is full of several unique Aussie dishes and ingredients, like the Kakadu Crosti—a crostini of kakadu plums, housemade goat cheese, prosciutto, shallots, kalamata tapenade, and balsamic reduction. Or for dessert, the Lamington—strawberry preserves sandwiched in yellow sponge cake, rolled in decadent dark chocolate ganache with a dusting of coconut shavings.
