The Nitty Gritty of Long Island City: Local Urban Photography
~PART 3 OF BORO’S SERIES OF LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATE FRANKLYN~
A few weeks ago I was on a mission photograph grunge: the real nitty-gritty of an urban landscape. I chose Long Island City, which is in the midst of a much needed renovation, and I photographed the old and the new side by side. I had a notion in my head to capture this type of true-to-life subject matter in all of its abstract state, then convert the images to a high detailed black and white allowing only tiny bits of color to peep out in certain areas of the image. The day was grey and overcast with occasional dark clouds which added to the stark mood of the images I was after. Below are a few of the images I captured that day.
